Digital Music and The Internet: A Critical Appraisal of The Use of Technological Protection Measures in Combating Online Music Piracy

The article analyzes the interface between technological innovation and copyright. The distribution of copyrighted material threatens copyright holders as never before, because every copy is identical to the original, copying is easy, and many people (especially the young) use file-sharing software to download copyrighted works. The article gives illuminating examples from the UE, USA, and Canada to trace the recent developments on the topic. Using case law and statutes, the article analyzes the different jurisdictions and how they have dealt with or attempted to deal with the problem of online music piracy for the last decade or so, and how African countries and Uganda in particular can learn from this experience.
